The tow
What does a private-property tow of a tractor-trailer cost in Texas?
Texas caps what a tow company can charge for a nonconsent tow from private property. For a combination vehicle the caps are high, because each unit counts. These are the state maximums set by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation:
- Tow: up to $489 per unitFor vehicles over 25,000 lbs, with a $978 maximum. A tractor and trailer are two units.
- Drop fee: up to $244Charged if you reach the truck after it is hooked up but before it leaves the lot.
- Storage: $39.99 a day per vehicleThe current daily storage rate for a vehicle longer than 25 feet at a licensed storage facility, charged per day or part of a day.
- Notification and impound: up to $70Up to $50 for notifying the owner and up to $20 for impoundment.
Those are the maximums, and cities can set lower ones. The time it takes to find the truck, get to the storage lot and pay to release it is not in any of those numbers. A single tow at the cap, $978, is more than seven months of a standard tractor-trailer stall at the published $129.99 monthly rate.
The theft
What does a cargo theft cost?
Thefts are less frequent than tows and far more expensive. CargoNet's figures for 2025, the most recent full year:
The load's value is usually the insurer's problem. What stays with the carrier is the deductible, the premium at renewal, the days the truck or trailer is out of service, and the customer relationship. A theft claim will also ask where the truck was parked. The garaging-address post covers why that answer matters, and the theft guide covers how thefts in this area actually happen.
The smaller lines
What else does unsafe parking cost?
- Citations and HOA complaintsStreet parking in residential Katy and Houston neighbourhoods runs into city ordinances and HOA rules. The Katy street-parking post covers what is enforced.
- Break-ins and stripped partsBatteries, catalytic converters, fuel and tools. Each is a small claim, or no claim at all if it falls under the deductible, plus a lost day.
- Time spent searchingEvery minute spent circling for a spot is a minute off the 14-hour clock. The hours-of-service post works through the numbers, and the diesel post prices the fuel.
- The lost dayA truck that is towed, broken into or damaged doesn't run the next load. What a lost day costs an owner-operator is its own post.
Putting it together
How do you compare the two?
The cost of a secure stall is fixed and known in advance. The cost of unsafe parking comes as a rare large bill. The comparison that matters is one tow, one break-in or one theft deductible against twelve months of rent. Put your own numbers in: the nights you park away from home each month, the tows or break-ins you or your drivers have had in the last few years, and your deductible. The line-item post shows how to book the stall as a fixed cost, and the security checklist covers what a yard should have before it earns that line.
