What happened?
A driver posted in r/Truckers about someone who claimed to have locked his keys in his truck and came to the driver for help (the r/Truckers thread). A lockout story is a familiar way to get a driver to open a cab or hand over keys.
The first lock a thief tries to open is often the driver.
What is CPC theft, and why is it hitting Houston?
Thieves are breaking into parked semi trucks around Houston to steal the CPC module. FOX 26 Houston reported on it on 2 October 2026 (FOX 26 Houston).
The CPC, or Common Powertrain Controller, is the truck's "brain". Without it the truck cannot run. That makes it small, valuable and quick to take.
FOX 26 spoke to Lawrence Truck and Trailer Sales, a Houston dealer that has been hit four times, affecting 16 trucks and costing about $100,000 over two years. A replacement CPC runs $1,000 to $2,000, before the downtime while you wait on parts (FOX 26 Houston).
The break-in takes minutes, and it often leaves damaged windows, dashboards and wiring behind. The trucks being targeted are Freightliners, model year 2020 or older (FOX 26 Houston).
What do truck stop scams usually look like?
Most truck stop scams are a story built to get you to open the cab or hand something over. The details change; the ask does not.
- The locked-out stranger.Someone says they locked their keys in their truck and asks to try yours, or asks you to step away from your cab for "just a minute".
- Fake roadside help.Someone offers to fix a problem you did not know you had, and needs inside the cab or under the hood to do it.
- Pressure and hurry.Any version where the clock is ticking, the person is upset, and the fix involves your keys or your door.
The common thread is simple: a real lockout gets solved by a locksmith, not by your keys.
How should a driver respond?
Keep your keys and keep the cab locked. You can still be helpful without opening anything.
- Don't hand over keys. Not to try a lock, not to move a truck, not for a minute.
- Offer a real fix.Say you will call a locksmith or the police for them. A genuine lockout welcomes that.
- Stay in or near a locked cab.Talk through a cracked window if you want to talk at all.
- Note the details.A description of the person, their vehicle and plate if you can see it, and the time.
- Report it.Tell the truck stop staff and the local police, so the next driver hears about it.
How do you protect the truck itself?
Make the CPC hard to take and easy to trace. These steps come from the FOX 26 report (FOX 26 Houston).
- Pull the CPC when you park.Do this if you run a Freightliner from 2020 or older.
- Ask about CPC password protection.Check with the manufacturer whether your truck supports it.
- Write down the CPC serial number.Report it if the module is ever stolen.
How does a gated, staffed yard help?
A gated yard with someone living on site lowers your exposure. It does not make theft impossible, and no yard can promise that.
LockRig's Brookshire yard is off I-10 at 3485 FM 362, Brookshire, TX 77423, about 12 minutes west of Katy. The gate is open 24/7 and opens by app or an individual keypad code, the yard is lit, and a resident manager lives on the property. A stranger asking for your keys has a harder time getting next to your truck in the first place.
If you need truck parking near Katy, the semi truck stalls take a tractor and a 53-foot trailer. Standard 40 to 80 ft stalls are $129.99 a month or $14.99 a day; the full rates are published. For how the yard is set up, see secure truck parking, or contact LockRig on 1-844-LOCK-RIG or 832-979-2713.
Questions drivers ask
What should I do if a stranger asks to borrow my truck keys?
Say no and keep your cab locked. Offer to call a locksmith or the police for them instead. Note what the person and their vehicle look like, and report it to the truck stop and the local police.
What is a CPC module and why are thieves stealing it?
The CPC, or Common Powertrain Controller, is the truck's "brain", and the truck cannot run without it. FOX 26 Houston reported that a replacement costs $1,000 to $2,000, plus downtime while waiting on parts.
Which trucks are most at risk of CPC theft?
According to FOX 26 Houston, the CPCs being targeted are in Freightliner trucks, model year 2020 or older.
How can I protect my CPC when I park?
Remove the CPC when you park if you run an older Freightliner, ask the manufacturer about CPC password protection, and record the CPC serial number so you can report it if it is stolen.
Is LockRig's yard gated and staffed?
Yes. The yard in Brookshire is gated, with a 24/7 gate that opens by app or an individual keypad code. It is lit, and a resident manager lives on the property. That lowers exposure; it does not guarantee a truck will never be touched.
